We've been playing this angular and mesmerizing piece for a long while as a duo, having learned it from the playing of John Salyer (b. 1882). Hailing from Magoffin County; Kentucky, Salyer was never commercially recorded but his home recordings made in 1940 and 1941 represent some of the most vital renderings of old style Appalachian fiddling known to exist. Fortunately; we waited to put this one on an album until the opportunity arose for Max to add these beautiful and subtle clawhammer lines.
