about

Jason - fiddle (GDAE); Rob - dulcimer (DGD)

We learned "Cacklin' Hen" from how Osey Helton (b. 1879) and his mentor JD Harris (b. -1868) did it. What we know about Osey Helton is pieced together over time from various sources, but with particular gratitude to Bob Carlin's informative research, published in a series of articles for the Old-Time Herald. Osey (pronounced "Ozzie") was a part-Cherokee fiddler who reportedly first learned to fiddle from a former slave who worked with Osey's father in an Asheville, North Carolina, distillery. He became a master musician, regularly performing with his brother Ernest and hanging with a bevy of venerable fiddlers in western NC that included Marcus Martin, Manco Sneed, and Bill Hensley. All of those legendary musicians were very influenced by JD Harris (aka Dedrick Harris), the patriarch of Blue Ridge Mountain fiddling in the early 20th century, who moved to the Asheville area from nearby Flag Pond, Tennessee. Harris got much of his archaic music from Wiley Laws, a blind fiddler from England who had immigrated in the 19th century. Bill Hensley once described Laws as a "terrible fiddler" - in other words, in today's parlance, he was sick. Although we haven't seen indication that Laws played this version of "Cacklin' Hen," there's no harm in speculating that it was one of his favorite tunes of all time.
