about

Jason - fiddle (AEAE); Rob - mando (AEAE); Brendan - banjo (aEAC#E)

Byard Ray (b. 1910) was fiddle teacher and inspiration to many aspiring musicians in Madison and Yancey Counties, North Carolina, for much of the later 20th century, including Jason's mom, Marilyn. As a wee one, Jason sometimes tagged along to visits with Byard in The Hayloft, at a bank in Burnsville (until Byard got a traffic ticket in the town square), and at Byard's home in Sodom Laurel. Unfortunately, Byard passed away before Jason could learn directly from him in earnest, though he once received a rattlesnake rattle from Byard as a gift for his wee fiddle. A couple years ago, Jason picked up one of Byard's old thrift-store fiddles from Byard's long-time pal and neighbor Taylor Barnhill, a Madison Co. architect who tells a story about saving a 3-year-old Jason from falling off a porch at "The Roadhouse," where Taylor was visiting Jason's parents back in the late 1970s. Byard had a bunch of cool old tunes and unique versions of standards, many of which he got from Mitch Wallin, JD Harris, Manco Sneed, and other fiddling elders in western NC. While most versions of "Devil's Dream" pursue the fire and fury, Byard Ray's playful rendition emphasizes more of the prankster vibe. He played it as a solo banjo tune using a two-finger picking style.

Drawing primarily on the archaic tunes and pre-radio aesthetics of Southern Appalachia, the duo has forged a compelling and authentic style of traditional music, both reflecting deep respect for the past masters and carrying the musical conversation forward to the present era. ... more
