Here's a reworking of "Splendid Isolation," a reel composed in 1972 by Irish fiddler Brendan McGlinchey (b. 1940). Jason first heard this tune from fiddler and friend Cathy Sky in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in the mid-1990s and immediately fell in love with it. McGlinchey was a prodigious and celebrated musician from County Armagh, N. Ireland, who spent most of his life in London and wrote several beautiful traditional-style tunes such as this one, now played throughout the world. He left this realm in 2020, butJason was lucky enough to have a session with McGlinchey in County Donegal in 2005. During the long periods of solitude imposed during the COVID-19 era, this tune took on a poignant significance, andJason's playing of it gradually morphed into a setting more conducive to American oldtime fiddling. Makes sense ... as isolation certainly played a pivotal role in the creation of so much of the music of Appalachia. Max's tasty clawhammer approach on the banjo comple­ments the modal melody and adds to the tune's transformation.
