about

A rare Grey Eagle from Manco Sneed (b. 1885), a part-Cherokee fiddler living near Asheville who got many old tunes, likely including this one, from the aforementioned J.D. Harris. A few modern players have interpreted the tune from the only extant recording of Sneed playing it in 1964, on which his highly idiosyncratic style is further complicated by distortion, feedback, and an interruption. As a result, no one can claim to match the original version. It’s just too punk! This is how we’re currently playing it.
