Jason - fiddle (CCGC)

It's a mystery to us how the aforementioned Osey Helton, who lived in Asheville, North Carolina, learnt this quintessential eastern Kentucky tune. He played it (apparently without a title) around 1939 for Jan Schinhan, a UNC-Chapel Hill music professor. Alan Lomax recorded Luther Strong (b. 1892) of Hazard, KY, playing "Glory in the Meetinghouse" in 1937, but the Library of Congress didn't publicly release that session until Helton had already passed. Many Kentucky fiddlers played the tune, though, reportedly including Shade Sloan (b. 1828), who traveled quite a bit. The tune (and especially Strong's variant) shares much with "The Templehouse" reel, which appears in Chief O'Neill's 1903 collection of Irish traditional music found in America, so that may be the grandparent of the various American oldtime versions.
