about

Jason - fiddle (FCFC); Rob- dulcimer (CFC); Maxine - banjo (fCFAC)

"Slow Buck" has long been one of our favorites and we recorded it as a duo on Hogeyed Man I, our first oldtime record. This "Slow Buck" seems to be unrelated to the Georgia string band tune of the same name as played by Gid Tanner and the Skillet Lickers. Byard Ray said he learned it from Mitch Wallin (b. 1854), his great-uncle. In the liner notes to his LP Traditional Music ef Southern Appalachia, Byard related that Wallin claimed the tune was written by "some old man who had a steer so slow that when he'd come out to the end of the field plowin', an' start back, and get back to the other end, the weeds 'ould be a-growin' in the furrow agin." According to the English folk music-collector Cecil Sharp, who visited Madison Co. in 1916, Wallin "played well but was perpetually improvising in detail." Lamenting the difficulty in notating his music, Sharp-unfavorably reported Wallin as having crowed, '"All my tunes are changeable."' Taking Wallin's ethos to heart, not too long ago we suddenly began preferring a major-seventh note in the high part of the tune (i.e., a G# rather than the G that Ray used when playing the tune in the key of A) ... and that's how we do it here, accompanied by Max on banjo. For this recording we lowered the pitch of all the instruments by a couple steps though, so that would translate to an E# (for those at home keeping track). All our tunes are changeable ...

Hog-eyed Man Athens, Georgia

Hog-eyed Man is an acoustic oldtime duo comprised of Jason Cade (fiddle) & Rob McMaken (lap dulcimer, mando, guitar). Drawing primarily on the archaic tunes and pre-radio aesthetics of Southern Appalachia, the duo has forged a compelling and authentic style of traditional music, both reflecting deep respect for the past masters and carrying the musical conversation forward to the present era. ... more
