about

Jason first heard Chapel Hill friends Pat and Cathy Sky play the magnificent, crooked Irish reel Spike Island Lasses in the 1990s. A slightly simpler version appears as Reidy’s Reel in Chief O’Neill’s Waifs & Strays of Gaelic Melody, a 1922 collection of Irish traditional music found in America. The tune is also close cousin to the Scottish strathspey Miss Hope, composed by John Pringle in 1800. Much more recently, Jason recast the piece in a southern Appalachian tuning and style. If we were ever asked to score a silent vaudeville scene involving old-timey knife-throwers, this is what we would play.
