Our approach to this winding musical tondo derives from both the outstanding fiddler Marcus Martin (b. 1881), who lived much of his life in Swannanoa, North Carolina, and the similar version played by North Georgia fiddler Allen Sisson (b. 1873). In the early twentieth century the fiddlers of the Blue Ridge Mountain region (i.e., northern GA, western NC, and eastern Tennessee) regularly interacted and shared many wonderful tunes in common. We are unsure what the title signifies (Sisson's Edison Records version was called simply "Walking Water"), but Max thinks it could be related to the concept expressed in Lead Belly's song "Old Riley" about a prisoner who "walked the water" - i.e., a shallow creek or river - to evade hound dogs trying to follow the escapee's scent.
