about

A twisty tune from the vast repertoire of blind Ed Haley (b. 1883), brilliant fiddler who was born in Logan, West Virginia, but lived most of his life in Ashland, Kentucky. Both states claim him as one of their own with understandable pride! Haley called this one Indian Squaw. Abenaki scholar Dr. Marge Bruchac says the term skwa refers to the “totality of being female,” and related words remain in use by Algonquin speakers, like manigebeskwa (“woman of the woods”). For some, however, the term has acquired a derogatory meaning, and we thought Woodswoman would make a suitable alternative.
