about

We learned this air from the playing of Marcus Martin (b. 1881), a master fiddler, banjoist, and dulcimer-builder from the Asheville, NC, area, who was recorded by UNC-Chapel Hill musicologist Dr. Jan Schinhan circa 1945- 1950. The melody is progeny of the celebrated Irish set dance The Blackbird, which has roots dating back to at least the early 1700s. George Mert Reeves of Arkansas and Edden Hammons of West Virginia played similar versions around the same time period as Martin, but with different titles.
